What is raqs sharqi all about?
Raqs sharqi (an Arabic term) translates to “Eastern dance” and is often referred to in English as “bellydance”. Like the dance forms we hold in high regard in the west, the purpose of this dance is to express emotion through music and movement. Dancers are a physical embodiment of the music and take the audience on a figurative journey. At parties, dancers help to create a lively, celebratory mood and encourage guests to dance and enjoy themselves.
Where does raqs sharqi come from?
The dances we now see performed professionally originated as a social dance done by ordinary people in Arab countries, as well as Turkey and Greece. For more information, read Oriental Dance: A Dance for the Whole Family by Shira.

Can I hire more than one dancer?
Yes. Lida collaborates with many talented professionals who are experienced in bringing fun to parties as well as the stage.
Is body tipping okay?
It depends on the dancer, but gracious tipping is usually gratefully accepted and was once considered part of the show — patrons would show off and even one-up each other with their tips. At restaurants, you may tuck bills into the dancer's belt and armbands, shower them over her head in a showy display, or fold the bills into a long necklace. If you've hired a dancer for your event, you may include a tip in her payment at your discretion.
How does one learn Middle Eastern dance?
Dancers take classes, go to workshops, and practice intensely to gain the strength, control, musicality, and cultural knowledge they need to interpret the wide rhythmic and emotional range of Middle Eastern music. This dance takes years to gain proficiency and decades to master, but is always rewarding. Contact Lida for teacher recommendations.
